About

My wife is a Prior Lake graduate. When we were first married we thought about where to live that would be a positive, affirming place where our future children would receive a great education. Prior Lake was the first, best choice for quality of life and future possibilities. We have four children. One a Burnsville graduate, a second who is a Prior Lake graduate, a Prior Lake High School Junior and Twin Oaks Middle School eighth grader. We have experienced some hardships and many triumphs as parents. We would not have been able to navigate through the troubling teenage years without the level of care shown by our engaged and supportive teachers and paraprofessionals around the district. We have watched as paras and specialists found pathways to unlock communication and learning for our youngest in the Lifeskills program. Because of their willingness to find pathways to yes, our son embraces math and technology and aspires to become a filmmaker. We partnered with teachers to help our older children who were contending with mental health challenges; placing them on a path toward success. We could not be more grateful for the support each step along the way.I hold a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration with concentrations in Project Management and Finance and an MBA with a specialization in Public and Nonprofit Management. Professionally, I spent more than 15 years in high technology overseeing global operations and escalation management with a Fortune 10 company before transitioning to the public sector where the family and I enjoy a more favorable work-life balance. I have worked for the City of Minneapolis for more than 6 years. At the City, I serve as the Director of Inspections Services, leading a professional cadre of housing and fire inspectors and alternative enforcement specialists charged with education of property owners and renters to safeguard health, life safety and livability within the community. Additionally, I serve as an adjunct professor at Crown College where I teach graduate-level business coursework with emphasie on strategy and policy. Why I'm Running
I firmly believe that education is an investment in the future of our community. All learners are capable of greatness. Whether as part of the Lifeskills program, gifted and talent programs, and core general education programs. All have the potential and capacity for greatness. Having experienced education in many locales through my own journey, as the parent of differently gifted children, as an ethnic minority, I give voice to those who feel they do not have voice in the process. My knowledge, skills, abilities and logical approach make me an ideal candidate to serve all members of our community. I was honored to serve an initial term and will be honored to have your support for another term.

on the issues

Academic Performance
It is no secret that standardized test scores are down year over year. This is not a unique phenomenon in Prior Lake-Savage schools, it is something that educators and districts are seeing across the state and across the country. Standardized tests, for all they measure, are not a true predictor of education attainment. There are other instruments available that Prior Lake-Savage is pursuing that are more capable of identifying knowledge attainment in learners. This is important so that educators and education support staff are able to adapt when they see that learners have met, mastered, or need additional help to grasp the core concepts. Implementation of a multi-tiered system of support will help address other barriers to learning that our learners may carry with them.
Removal of Social Justice, Activism, and Indoctrination from the Classroom
As a student myself, we studied current events. Current events granted teachers a way to connect with learners on myriad topics in ways that brought our lessons to life. What others may see as social justice, activism and indoctrination I see as a reflection of the current environment in which we find ourselves. Educators and parents must partner together to teach our learners what is happening in the world around them so that they are equipped to interact with, work alongside, and lead in these spaces. Learners are taught to advocate for themselves and others in co-curricular environments, to use their voices to champion causes, to research and identify solutions. These are all skills that are essential if learners are to compete and lead in the world's best workforce.
Fiscal Responsibility
As a school board, we are stewards of public resources and public trust. We must take this fiduciary responsibility seriously, scrutinizing over how resources are utilized before determining when to spend and how much to spend. These decisions are not made in a vacuum, however. We require community and stakeholder input to take a comprehensive view before making decisions.
Transparency & Accountability
We are blessed with a supportive community that believes in the value of education. This support requires that the school board take public feedback into consideration. We must engage community voices into the decision process as new developments unfold. The Legislative Policy and Community Engagement committee started on this path four years ago and has matured with community input. The newly formed Finance Advisory Committee leverages these early wins and creates space for community voice with respect to capital improvements and ongoing operational needs. Next we need forums where more community members may have a place to listen, learn and participate. The commitment of the school board is to hold one another and our one employee, the Superintendent, accountable.
Social Emotional Learning
Social Emotional learning is an important aspect to education. As our learners enter the workplace they will encounter many obstacles which are common when interacting with peers, supervisors, and customers. Working in project-based environments allows learners to increase awareness of their own learning styles, communication styles, and conflict resolution preferences. The learner will also build awareness of the comparable patterns in their peers and how to interact with those with differing styles. The more exposure our learners have to these scenarios the better equipped they will be to identify conflict, voice concerns and resolve conflicts diplomatically.
Gender and Sexuality
Human sexuality is a nuanced topic. One that students may encounter with conflicting information. Addressing the topic in the classroom may be a daunting task for any educator, depending on the maturity level of the learners in the classroom space. Ignoring the topic altogether is not a solution. Learners want to discuss the subject so that they may better understand the experiences of their peers, view the topic through another person's perspective and gain valuable insight that would be otherwise unobtainable without a safe space to share in the discussion. The role of an educator would be to facilitate the discussion in a safe and respectful way for all because each learner, regardless of their beliefs, gender identity, sexual identity deserve a place where they feel that they belong. Learning about gender and sexual diversity is critical toward creating a more inclusive community that is supportive of all peers in a safe and affirming environment.
Technology Usage
Technology is an invaluable resource capable of bringing experiences to learners in different ways. For Lifeskills students technology provides repetition of tasks so that the newly formed skill may have a chance at becoming part of a daily routine. For other learners technology is the way that they communicate with the world and educators communicate with them, in return. Technology unlocks a world of learning possibilities by accessing content that would otherwise be inaccessible. Technology has the ability to take the expansive world and bring it closer; fostering an environment where our learners build knowledge, skill and experience navigating an ever changing world.
Bullying and Harassment
I am vehemently against bullying and harassment of any kind and strongly advocate for zero-tolerance for any confirmed cases of either one. Whether by an educator, support staff or from students, we as a community must respond swiftly to all reports of bullying and harassment if we are to create a district that promotes belonging for all learners and visitors to our school spaces.
Student Mental Health and Support
Student Mental health was top of mind pre-pandemic. What the pandemic highlighted was that there were many more students struggling who were able to mask, able to rely on their peer groups, able to survive when we believed they were thriving. As the pandemic transitioned to an endemic and school shifted back to in-person learning, we see the level of need. The needs are great and the call for action is urgent. We need increased access to mental health services for our learners and families, available in times of crisis and with ongoing support where needed. Student mental health is about embracing the whole learner and everything they bring to school so that we, as a community, may unpack what needs to be unpacked from the emotional backpack, fill these spaces with positivity, openness and belonging so that they may embrace learning.
